What If It’s Not the Plan But the Belief?

A few days ago, I started listening to a conversation between Nir Eyal and Lewis Howes…

And one idea stopped me in my tracks.

He broke things down like this:

  • Facts are true whether you believe them or not

  • Faith is conviction without needing evidence

  • Belief sits in the middle… a conviction that is open to revision based on new evidence

And I couldn’t help but think…

This is exactly what I see every single day when it comes to health, fitness, and habits.

We all know the facts:

  • Strength training builds muscle

  • Moving your body daily improves your health

  • Eating real food supports your energy and metabolism

Those things are true whether you believe them or not.

And yet…

So many people are stuck.

Not because they don’t know what to do.

But because of what they believe.

“I’ve tried everything.”

“My body just doesn’t respond.“

"I can’t stay consistent.”

Those aren’t facts.

They’re beliefs.

And here’s the important part:

Beliefs can be changed.

Because unlike facts…They’re open to revision.

What I see happen (over and over again) is this:

Someone tries a program.

It doesn’t work the way they hoped.

And instead of adjusting the approach…

They adjust the belief.

They start telling themselves:“This doesn’t work for me.”

But what if the belief shifted instead?

What if it became:

“I haven’t found the right approach yet.”

“Maybe my body needs a different strategy.”

“What if I stayed consistent just a little longer?”

Now we’re in a completely different conversation.

This is where motivation gets interesting.

Because most people think motivation comes first.

But in reality…

Belief fuels action.

Action creates evidence.

Evidence strengthens belief.

And the cycle continues.

So instead of asking:

“What’s the best workout?”

“What’s the perfect plan?”

Try asking:

“What do I currently believe about myself?”

“Is that belief helping me… or holding me back?”

Because the truth is…

You don’t need more information.

You need a belief that supports the person you’re becoming.

And maybe—just for today—

You borrow a new one:

“If I stay consistent with the basics… my body will respond.”

Not perfectly.Not overnight.

But it will.

PS: If this hit a little close to home, you’re not alone.

Sometimes the biggest shift isn’t in your workout… it’s in your thinking.

And when those two start working together?

That’s when everything changes.

Cheering you on,

Deb
