The Most Productive Thing You Can Do Might Be….Nothing

There are days when the most productive thing you can do is stop trying to be productive.

That might sound strange coming from someone who loves setting goals, building strength, and helping women become their healthiest selves. But after years of coaching—and learning through my own experiences—I’ve come to believe that knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing when to push.

The to-do list will still be there tomorrow.

The emails can wait.

The laundry isn’t going anywhere.

Sometimes the healthiest decision you can make is to pause.

Why Rest Feels So Hard

For many women—especially entrepreneurs, business owners, caregivers, and grandmothers—we’ve been conditioned to believe our worth is tied to our productivity.

If we’re resting, we should be cleaning.

If we’re relaxing, we should be working.

If we’re sitting still, we should be doing something “useful.”

We wear busyness like a badge of honor.

But here’s the truth:

Your value has never depended on how many boxes you check.

You don’t become more worthy because you crossed off twelve tasks today.

You don’t become less valuable because you chose to rest.

Your Nervous System Needs Recovery

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through studying the nervous system is this:

Your body wasn’t designed to stay in “go mode” all the time.

When we’re constantly rushing, multitasking, worrying, and pushing ourselves, our nervous system stays in a heightened state of stress. Over time, that affects everything—from our sleep and energy to our hormones, mood, recovery, and even our ability to lose fat or build strength.

Recovery isn’t just for athletes.

It’s for every woman who wants to feel healthy, clear-minded, and resilient.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your health isn’t another workout or another task.

It’s creating a few moments of calm.

A Different Evening Routine

Tonight, instead of asking yourself, “What else should I get done?” try asking:

“What would help my body feel safe enough to relax?”

Maybe it’s:

  • Lighting a candle.

  • Putting your feet up.

  • Reading a few pages of a book.

  • Sitting outside and watching the sunset.

  • Taking a slow walk.

  • Practicing deep breathing.

  • Enjoying a cup of tea without checking your phone.

These aren’t wasted moments.

They’re investments in tomorrow’s energy.

Rest Is Part of Living Well

As women over 50, we’ve earned the wisdom to know that life isn’t a race.

Strength isn’t built by pushing harder every single day.

It’s built through the balance of challenge and recovery.

The same is true in business.

The same is true in life.

Rest isn’t laziness.

It’s wisdom.

It’s recovery.

It’s resilience.

It’s one of the healthiest choices you can make.

So if you’re reading this and feeling guilty for slowing down, consider this your permission slip.

Light the candle.

Put your feet up.

Take a deep breath.

And just be.

Your body—and your nervous system—

will thank you.

I’d love to hear from you.
