You Can’t Out-Supplement the Basics

3 min read

A bottle for energy. A powder for your gut. Gummies for sleep. Something else for stress, metabolism, and whatever an Instagram ad just convinced you is wrong with you.

Before you know it, you’ve spent hundreds of dollars trying to feel better.

But how much sleep are you getting? When did you last eat a real meal sitting down? Have you moved your body today? Had any water? Taken five minutes for yourself?

I know.

Those questions aren’t nearly as exciting as a new product promising to change everything.

Buying something can feel like taking action, especially when you’re tired, frustrated, and juggling everyone else’s needs.

There’s no shame in wanting help. But before we add another bottle to the counter, let’s look at the foundation underneath it.

Let’s come back to my Simple 7

Seven habits I come back to again and again.

Simple—and easy to push aside while we look for something more impressive.

1. Sleep.

Make room for rest instead of giving yourself whatever time is left. Start with a realistic bedtime and a little space to wind down.

2. Water.

Before you order another wellness drink, check whether you’re drinking water consistently. Keep it where you can see it.

3. Move your body.

Walk. Build strength. Get up from your desk. Think about what you want your body to help you do: carry the suitcase, get up off the floor, keep up with the grandkids. Give movement a place on your calendar.

4. JERF: Just Eat Real Food.

Come back to actual meals with protein and variety: vegetables, fruit, beans, eggs, fish, meat, and other foods that work for you. You don’t need a perfect menu or expensive “health” products.

5. Nature.

Sit on the porch. Walk somewhere with trees. Notice the sky instead of another screen. A few minutes count.

6. Gratitude.

Notice something good: a conversation, a small win, something your body allowed you to do. You can be grateful and still have a hard day. Both can be true.

7. Me Time.

Time alone, with yourself, for yourself. No work. No taking care of everybody else. No requirement to make it productive. Put yourself on your own list.

So where do supplements fit?

Supplements can help meet specific nutrient needs, but they don’t replace a varied diet or prescribed medication. Some interact with medications, so discuss what you take—or want to add—with your healthcare professional or pharmacist.

You don’t have to “earn” appropriate treatment by perfecting your habits. Persistent exhaustion, poor sleep, or new or unexplained symptoms deserve evaluation.

The Simple 7 belong alongside appropriate healthcare.

But a supplement purchase doesn’t create time for rest, put a walk on your calendar, or establish a boundary with people who have access to every minute of your day.

Those things still need our attention.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I hoping this will change?

  • What does an ordinary week actually look like for my Simple 7?

  • Is there a specific need for this product, and who can help me assess that?

Be honest without turning it into another reason to feel bad.

For the next seven days, choose one of the Simple 7 and give it more attention.

Take a short walk after lunch. Set out your water in the morning. Put ten minutes of Me Time on the calendar—and keep the appointment.

You don’t have to overhaul your life by Monday.

Build habits that support the life you want: more energy for your people, more strength for your adventures, more room for yourself.

The basics may be boring.

I’m still going to keep talking about them.

Which of the Simple 7 needs your attention this week?
